Information about the service

A International Day Pass charge is automatically applied when you use your services overseas in eligible destinations. Usage includes making or receiving a call, sending an SMS or using mobile data. International Day Pass is available for use each day but you’re only charged when you use your service overseas in an eligible country. Each day a service is used in an eligible destination, $5 or $10 will be charged to your account and the inclusions listed in the table above will be available for use that day (AEST). Unused data expires at the end of each day (AEST). If you cancel your International Day Pass or deactivate roaming during that day, you’ll still be charged the Day Pass charge for that day.

FAQs: Frequently Asked Questions

Once enabled on your mobile service, an International Roaming Day Pass will activate the moment your service is switched on and used in an eligible destination outside of Australia.

Your International Roaming Day Pass will expire for:

  • Upfront plans 24 hours from your service being used
  • Non-Upfront plans at 11.59pm Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST)
  • Any unused data expires at the end of each day.

Day Pass charges apply for the days when your service is used overseas to make or receive calls, send SMS, or if data is used, including background data usage. Receiving an SMS will not trigger your Day Pass.

Once you’re back in Australia, you can leave your International Roaming Day Pass switched on and you won’t be charged.

To track your data usage:

  1. Sign in to My Telstra
  2. Select your service under Services
  3. Select International usage.

You can also choose your preferred data usage notification method under Services > Extras > International Roaming.

To buy more data:

If you’re on an Upfront Plan, we’ll send an SMS with the option to buy a Data Top-Up. Non-Upfront Plans automatically get a Data Top-Up.

  1. Sign in to My Telstra
  2. Select your service under Services
  3. Select Extras, then International Roaming
  4. Purchase an International Roaming Data Top-Up.

If you’re on an Upfront plan

If you’re on an Upfront plan and your destination isn’t included in the International Roaming Day Pass, you’ll need to connect to local Wi-Fi.

If you’re on any other Telstra plan

If you’re on any other Telstra mobile plan and your destination isn’t included in the International Roaming Day Pass, you’ll be charged Pay-As-You-Go rates to use your phone in that destination.

The rates for each country will vary and once you arrive in your destination, we’ll send you an SMS with the rates that apply.

If you don’t want to use Day Pass, make sure it’s turned off:

  1. Sign in to My Telstra
  2. Select your service under Services
  3. Select Extras, then International Roaming
  4. Toggle International Roaming Day Pass off.

If you’re on an Upfront plan

To connect without Day Pass overseas, you’ll need to use local Wi-Fi. We also have Pre-Paid International Roaming Packs for Pre-Paid customers.

If you’re on any other Telstra plan

You also have the option to not use the International Roaming Day Pass while in Day Pass countries and be charged on a Pay-As-You-Go basis instead, but this isn’t recommended because it can be far more expensive.

To help avoid unwanted costs, check out our information on reducing your bill costs when travelling overseas.

If you’re using dual SIM (multiple services on one device), be aware of your primary and secondary number settings. Either mobile number could potentially incur International Roaming charges.

When travelling overseas with a device that has more than one service installed, it’s a good idea to familiarise yourself with how dual SIM works on your device to stay in control of your usage and roaming costs. You may already be using dual SIM in Australia, or you may create a dual SIM set up while overseas if you add a local SIM on the same device as your existing Telstra service.

You can disable International Roaming for each Telstra service independently however this will not prevent charges from being incurred if Voicemail/MessageBank is used for any of your Telstra numbers.

To ensure no costs are incurred by temporarily switching off or removing a service on eSIM from your device, refer to the instructions for dual SIM number management from your device manufacturer, including Apple, Samsung and Google. This should be done before you leave Australia.

Voice over LTE (VoLTE) lets you make phone calls using data.

VoLTE will increasingly be required to make or receive phone calls (including emergency calls) when roaming abroad. To ensure you can make calls while roaming you must have a device capable of supporting VoLTE roaming.

For more information, find out how to enable VoLTE on your mobile phone.

Day and Month passes are available for your team while travelling for work. Rates for Business customers can be found at small business international roaming day pass.

If you’re an Enterprise customer, visit business enterprise international roaming day pass.
