Simplifying nbn® Technology: What You Need to Know
As a Telstra partner, we at Teltech ICT know how critical reliable internet is for your business. Whether you’re upgrading your nbn® plan, opening new locations, or relocating, it’s important to understand the different types of nbn® technology available. The type of connection at your premises can directly impact the speed and performance of your internet.
Here’s a simple guide to help you navigate the key nbn® connection types:

FTTN: Fibre to the Node
FTTN delivers optical fibre to a central point on your street or a nearby location, known as a “node.” From there, it uses existing copper wiring to connect to your premises.
What to know about FTTN:
- Speeds depend on your distance from the node.
- Ideal for premises close to the node but may experience slower speeds if further away.

FTTB: Fibre to the Building/Basement
FTTB is the go-to connection for multi-dwelling buildings like apartments, units, or commercial spaces. Fibre optic cables run to a communications room within the building, then use internal wiring—typically copper in older buildings or ethernet in newer ones—to connect to your premises.
Why FTTB works well:
- Great for shared buildings.
- Performance varies based on the building’s internal wiring.

FTTC: Fibre to the Curb
FTTC provides fibre optic cables right up to a small pit or pole near your premises, with the final stretch using existing copper wiring to complete the connection.
FTTC advantages:
- Offers faster speeds than FTTN because the fibre reaches closer to your premises.
- While faster than FTTN, it doesn’t match the speed and reliability of FTTP.

FTTP: Fibre to the Premises
FTTP, also known as “full fibre,” is the gold standard for nbn® connections. It uses optical fibre all the way to your premises, providing the highest performance and reliability.
Why FTTP stands out:
- Handles the fastest data speeds and heaviest data demands.
- More reliable than copper-based connections.
- Perfect for businesses that rely on high-speed, uninterrupted internet.
