What Is The NBN Network?
The nbn™ or National Broadband Network is the Australian National Internet and Data Project. This new telecommunications network is being rolled out across Australia, to replace the old copper network with new fibre-based technology. It is designed to deliver faster, more reliable broadband and is a big deal for Small Businesses. The nbn™ will provide improved broadband speed, better quality voice and data delivery.
Do I have to switch to nbn™?
Essentially, yes. Services will be progressively disconnected from the old network after the nbn™ is rolled out across Australia. To continue having a fixed phone and broadband service, you’ll need to switch to phone and broadband services on the nbn™.
So, while in the short-term you could happily continue on using your current setup, over the next two years you will be either migrated across or disconnected. From the date your nbn™ connection is ready, you’ll have 18 months to make the switch before existing services are turned off. To find out if you can get services on the nbn™ now, you can get in touch with the team here at Teltech ICT.

Understanding nbn™ Tiers
Each nbn™ tier differs in speed and capacity. Which tier you require will depend on your usage and the number of users connected simultaneously. Have you ever noticed that internet speed diminishes the more people that use it? This is because the connection cannot keep up with the demand, so it slows down in order to equally service its users. How fast and reliable your nbn™ connection is, will depend on the number of users connected as well as the demand each user places on the connection, for example, online gaming can perform well at slow internet speeds, but once other users are added, the demand put on the connection is doubled.
If the demand is higher than the capacity, then your connection will be reduced as it cannot keep up.
What nbn™ network speed do I need for my business?
When considering your switch to an nbn™ plan, what’s most important is making sure you choose the right plan for you and your business needs. There are four different nbn™ speeds and plans to choose from each based on the requirements of how people use their internet.
As the table below shows, nbn™ plans are sold using speed tiers, giving you the option to pay more for a faster connection. The four-speed options are nbn™ 12, 25, 50 and 100. The numbers in these titles relate to the speed of the connection. An nbn™ 12 plan can download data at 12Mbps, while an nbn™ 100 plan can download at 100Mbps.
