Gough Whitlam, the 21st Prime Minister of Australia has sadly passed away two weeks ago at the age of 98. The former leader of the Labour Party will be remembered for his many achievements made throughout his time as our nations leader from 1972-1975.

Gough Whitlam captivated the nation with his leadership and many triumphs. Mr Whitlam revolutionised modern Australia by funding schools, opening universities and establishing universal health care. Overall he achieved the goal of ‘transforming our country and the way we see ourselves’.

Furthermore, one of Gough’s greatest achievements occurred in 1975 when he replaced the Postmaster-General’s Department (known as the PMG) with Telecom Australia and Australia Post. Later Telecom was rebranded to its current name Telstra.

The Whitlam legacy is present in the lives of Australians every day.
